Hey, that sounds like: Monster Magnet -- Crop Circle
  • Busy weekend coming up: tonight is Bo-topia (a.k.a. [info]wurdsome's birthday party) which I'm leaving for straight from work, then tomorrow evening I'm off to see Testament (and several other metal bands I've never heard of) as part of Powerfest 2008 in scenic Mokena, IL. And Sunday I'll spend doing the chores I should do Saturday, but won't because I have the excuse of the concert.

  • My BushBucks have arrived! And it looks like I'll be stimulating the economy more than I thought. I decided to spend some of it on new books and somehow that turned into a $100 orgy of expenditure last night at SFBC.com -- they were having a sale, $9.99 per book after you buy two at regular price. I'm getting A Canticle For Leibowitz (which, inexcusably, I haven't read yet), World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, and the first six (!) books in Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, which is projected to run to ten.

  • And while I was being frivolous, I also spent another hundred bucks for a ticket to the Metal Masters Tour in August. Actually, make that $45 for the ticket, $30 for parking, and $25 in various fees and fuck-you charges. The headliners are Judas Priest and Heaven and Hell (which is basically Dio-era Black Sabbath, minus Bill Ward, plus Vinnie Appice) and the opening acts are Motörhead and Testament (again!) In a way this show will be me coming full circle in my concert-going history: the first concert I ever attended was a Judas Priest / Megadeth / Testament show at Rosemont Horizon in 1990. But to be totally honest, the thing that clinched it for me is "how many chances am I going to get to see Motörhead?"

  • For those of you who are going to the Cubs game on 5/17 -- and [info]neonhummingbird, I'm still counting you as a "yes" because [info]stankow has volunteered to cover some of your ticket, so please let me know if you weren't aware of that and have made other plans -- and have been wondering how to reimburse me, I haven't been able to think of an easier means than PayPal to take care of that, unless you want to bring a personal check with you.

Accordingly, my PayPal account is under exaustinite(at)hotmail.com, and the ticket price is $52.00, so whenever you're ready, willing, and fully-funded, let 'er rip. I'm covering all the taxes and fees and whatnot, to apologize for the crappiness and priciness of the seats, so don't worry about that. If you would prefer to send a personal check or something through snail mail, send an email to that address instead and I'll give you my meatspace coordinates. :)

(Oh, and there's still one ticket left, by the by...)

  • What else? Ah, yes. Those of you who were privy to my red light violation post back in March may be interested to know that I did go ahead and contest it by mail after all, but I ended up having to pay it anyway, as many including myself suspected I would.

On the other hand, I also got a notice from the IL Tollway Authority a few days afterward, demanding $220.00 in unpaid tolls and fees, which I managed to deal with over the phone without having to pay a single cent for. Turns out the expiration date had run out on the credit card I had tied to my I-Pass account, and I didn't realize this for about a week. When I updated it, the account still showed a small balance, so I figured I'd gotten lucky, but alas this was not the case. The gentleman I spoke to on the phone was very helpful and waived all the fees -- as well as the unpaid toll charges, which turned out to have been paid automatically as soon as I corrected my info on the I-Pass Account. So thanks for the pointless scary mail, IL Tollway Authority.
That seems like enough for now. TGIF! And PSA: Mother's Day is a week from Sunday! Don't forget!

10 tickets purchased via StubHub at $52.00; the seats are waaaay up in the upper deck between home and first base, and they are general admission, but they are ours. :)

We have 8 confirmed attendees at this time: [info]byrneout, [info]dogofthefuture, [info]mule242, [info]stankow, [info]resplendentoops and guest, [info]neonhummingbird and uh, me, I guess.

Mathematics reveals that there are still 2 tix going begging. One of these is reserved for a friend as a 95% maybe, but the other I trust will find itself a home before the Day. You all know how to reach me if you're interested.

Hey, that sounds like: Ten East -- Aqua Beard
After double-checking, it looks like the direct link to buy tickets from Wrigley is only allowing me to select up to 1 ticket for the game on 5/17. So that's no good. :/

Our alternative is getting them from StubHub, which will involve a certain premium to get us all seated together. The cheapest I can find for a group our size (currently 9, but I'm assuming we can scrape up a 10th or dispose of the extra ticket somewise) are these, located in Row 09 of the Infield Upper Deck Reserved 525, at $52.00 apiece.

After that it looks like we have these, which are Row 20 of the Outfield Terrace Reserved 208, at $75.00 apiece.

I've never ordered from StubHub before, so I don't know what to expect on continued pricing/availability. But it would be useful to know if this alternative has made the tickets too rich for anybody's blood, so if you were in and now you're out (or alternatively, if you hadn't heard about this before and want in), please let me know ASAP. I'll probably want to order as soon as I hear from several of our principals, so probably mid-week at the latest rather than next Monday. :)

  • Today is the 10th anniversary of the day I quit smoking: July 1, 1997.

(It's also the 10th anniversary of the day Hong Kong was handed back to the Chinese. No, I didn't quit as a symbolic protest -- it just happened to work out that way.)

In an unfortunate coincidence, my good friend [info]dogofthefuture recently revealed that his mother is about to undergo a difficult chemotherapy/surgery regimen to treat her lung cancer, caused by years of smoking. She's one of the lucky ones who is treatable, and thank goodness for that.

As an ex-smoker, I've never been the kind to lecture people about smoking or complain when they want to do it around me. I know how harrassed smokers feel today, and I have better things to do than pile on, especially since my other good friend [info]manda_x is better at it than I'll ever be.

But if you're my friend, and you're reading this, and you're a smoker, and you're thinking about quitting, please do. It's hard, but not impossible (otherwise, how could a lazy-ass like myself do it?) and it improves your life almost immediately. And not just health-wise: major brands were $2.25 a pack when I quit ten years ago -- and $1.50 when I started. How much did you pay for your last pack?

(Besides, this is now a Permanent Livejournal account and I don't want to be blogging in two or ten or twenty years about how you are starting a series of painful and debilitating chemo treatments.)

  • About three years ago, I loaned $900 to a woman I knew only through the internet who desperately needed it. (More than I did, anyway.) I received a check in the mail on Thursday for $900. And as a thank-you gesture, she's offered to fly me out to Washington D.C. this summer so I can sightsee, and let me crash at her place three blocks from the Capitol.

The lesson here is that not everyone on the internet with financial trouble is untrustworthy, and that what goes around often does come around. Unless it's those guys from Nigeria. Those guys can ES&D.

Trying to decide what I should get with (some of) this extra fundage I've got kicking around is proving more difficult than I'd anticipated. Hence the following lists.

Things I "Need"
1. New/additional 80+ gig hard drive. (The current 80-gigger has 7 gigs free.)
2. New cell phone. (I qualify for an upgrade, and the old cheapo phone is having trouble holding a charge.)

Things I'd Like
1. New clothes. (T-shirts, jeans, belt, denim jacket.)
2. Flat-screen computer monitor.
3. Car stereo that plays tapes.
4. Books and/or DVDs.

Things I Wouldn't Mind
1. New stereo.
2. New couch.
3. New, larger computer desk.
4. New wall decorations.
5. 4-track.
6. Tattoo. (Most likely in combination with an Austin trip later in the year.)

Well, it's official -- I'm not moving out for another year at least. :)

Since I'd already asked for today and tomorrow off of work, and it would have been a bigger hassle to try and cancel those requests and keep the vacation days than just to stay home, I elected to do that and pop by the rental office to pay my last (?) month's rent in person and ask about renewal.

A story of renewal and enrichment. )

Anticipating at least some of this good fortune, I paid off my remaining credit card debt this month as well; and since the card I had it all on is a Reader's Rewards card from the Science Fiction Book Club, I'm entitled to a free book from them, which is nice. I ordered it today -- it's a pair of graphic novels by Eric Rudolph featuring The Goon, which looked kind of interesting and worth checking out for free.

Last piece of good news is that I'm finally going to be getting some new correctional eyewear to replace my biffed-up glasses -- which are so old that the lenses are scratched from Oreo chewing on them when she was a kitten. Lack of outstanding debt always puts me in the mood to improve my lot, so I saw an optometrist yesterday and got a prescription for new contact lenses -- my first set since I dropped off my dad's vision insurance in the late 1990s. My own vision plan makes them pretty affordable, and the eye doctor is walking distance from my apartment which makes picking them up a snap.

The doctor also mentioned that I'm a good candidate for LASIK (which [info]letsgomiah has been singing the praises of) and that my vision plan entitles me to a discount. He quoted me a price of $38 per month with no money down, though, which means it's going to have to wait until the car gets paid off. Wealth effect or no wealth effect, I ain't no dummy.

PROCRASTINATION:
Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now.

--Despair.com, my favorite company in the whole wide world.

Since today marks two weeks before my official move-out day, I've been getting increasingly anxious about the whole thing. So much work left to do, so many hassles incoming, arrangements left to be resolved, etc. Basically I just wanted the whole thing to be over, or to be happening to somebody else.

With that in mind, I got some really amazing and unexpected good news today: I don't have to move! (Just yet.)

One of my co-workers happens to live in the same complex I do, and mentioned to me in passing that he'd heard the management company is still renewing leases. (Apparently, as predicted, they're having trouble unloading the condos for the outrageous amount of money they're asking.) I called my current landlord and spoke to the office lady, who confirmed that this was, in fact the case.

Furthermore, she advised me that my lease wasn't set to expire until end of March, rather than end of February as I'd supposed. I think this is actually bad record-keeping on their part, because I know I moved in at the end of February in '03 (prorated, so the actual start of the lease was 3/1) and had been renewing 12 months at a time ever since. But whatever, the point is that I don't have to move! Yay!

The small bit of bad news in the midst of my overwhelming joy is that I've already spent $185 in nonrefundable deposit money for the movers and the application/administrative fees at the place I was going to move into. But I think I left that stuff about as late as I reasonably could with the information I had on hand. I guess if I had gone to the landlords myself to check on things I might've learned all this earlier, but they haven't communicated a single thing to me since the whole mess started back in September, so I assumed that nothing had changed. And I do still have a small concern that the rent on my current place will jump up to a larger-than-expected degree when I talk to them about renewal next month, but considering I was prepared to pay a higher rent anyway, and lay out money for pet deposits and whatnot, I'm still feeling good about it.

Luckily I haven't been very conscientious at all about packing, so my laziness comes to the rescue for a change. Hence the quote above. :)

Some good news in the apartment search at last: I've finally found myself a reasonably suitable place.

The good news:
  1. It's in our service area (allowing me to continue to get free cable).

  2. Pets are allowed.

  3. There are vacancies on the first floor.

  4. It has a few nice amenities, e.g. a dishwasher, vertical blinds on all the windows, and a 24-hour laundry room in each building.

  5. The complex is under new management as of May '06, and they did a massive refurb project on all the units, so all of the appliances and stuff are brand new.
But there's also some not-so-good news:
  1. It's $20 more a month for significantly less square footage than I have now.

  2. It's 10 minutes farther from work and everything else of interest (the city, my parents' house, etc.)
The small plus about the latter drawback is that it's still in Glen Ellyn, so I'll get my money's worth out of the 3-year city sticker I paid $70 for last April instead of having it go to waste.

I was really hoping to find someplace in Schaumburg, but the places I have found so far either don't have any vacancies, aren't in our service area, or are well outside my price range. So no savings on gas or travel time or fabulous Schaumburg Library access for me. *scuffs foot dejectedly* Although I haven't given up looking, so maybe the perfect place will show up at the last minute. Right?

Anyway, Saturday at 1pm is when I go to check the place out in person. Unless there's exposed sewage or what-not that I haven't been told about, I'm thinking this is probably a good "safety school" to go with.

The other piece of good news is that I filed my '06 taxes late last week, so I should have an extra $1000 coming in to help with the move. I've priced the move-in and first month's rent out at around $1250 (plus whatever hiring movers for a couple hours' work will cost) so I should be in great shape financially. I won't have to buy any new furniture -- quite the opposite really, since I'm going from a 2BR to a 1BR -- so it'll mostly be a matter of pulling crap down at the old place and putting it back up at the new place.

So far, so good. Now I just have to figure out how many/which days to ask off from work, and get packed up, and put in an order for some movers, and...

Hey, that sounds like: Iron Maiden -- Fear of the Dark (live)
It's been awhile since I had a real update about my life, so here goes. We'll try to be brief -- maybe this time that'll work.

Situational:
1. Still planning to move out around the end of February. Haven't done much to prepare, as it's still way too early to start looking, since nobody will know if they will have vacancies in March at this point. I brought home a couple boxes from work. and have applied myself to eating some of the food in the cupboard that doesn't usually make it into the regular rotation: pancakes & syrup, canned fruit, canned veggies, etc. That's about it.

2. Got about $200 in credit card debt that needs to get paid off before Christmas so I can start saving for the move. Made an extra-big payment this month to get it down to $200 and realized I only got about $30 left for food to last me all of next week. Eep! (But see above.)

Work-Related:
3. Got myself caught up for a change, so not a lot of news here. Except...

4. It's that time of the year where I need to start using up personal/vacation days, so I put in requests this morning that, if approved, will mean that I'll have every Monday off starting 11/28 and lasting through the end of 2006. That will kick a lot of ass. Plus it still leaves me one extra vacation day that I have to use, maybe to cushion the blow of a night on the town. Maybe even for watching Election Night returns somewhere...you interested, maybe, [info]misskaz?

Sporty:
5. The Headbangers' (baseball version) season is over. We came in 4th of twelve teams...or really more like 4th of 6, since half the managers couldn't be bothered to pay attention. I didn't pay much attention either, to be honest, but I at least watched my lineup to make sure I had people playing every day.

6. The Headbangers (football version) are off to an 0-4 start, so their season is just about over, too. My starting QB got a concussion Week 1 -- in the nastiest collision I have ever seen live on TV -- and it's been downhill from there. Poop.

7. Da Bears, however, are 4-0 and #1 in ESPN's Power Rankings this week. So I could give a rat's ass about the other stuff. :)

8. I'm not a baseball fan (I root for the Cubs by default, when I remember) but I know people who are. So [info]dogofthefuture, [info]letsgomiah, [info]ropo, and all the rest of youse who care and are engrossed in the ALCS/NLCS/WS action that I am ignoring: this is for you. Enjoy.

Eight is enough. Have a great weekend, all. :)

P.S. Oh, and I'm watching lots of TV, some of which I might review for your reading pleasure if things get boring at work next week.

Got a cell phone bill for $277.35 this morning. Also, $330 worth of outstanding checks finally cleared the bank. Friday is payday, and that money has already been spent on rent and 2/3 of a car payment. Got less than half a tank of gas left, which will have to last until Friday at least. Have spent all the money in my food budget for September. Didn't buy my brother a wedding present, although I will at some point. Cancelled my land line this afternoon because I could no longer justify $35/mo. for a "backup" phone that nobody calls except telemarketers. Still have $550 in credit card debt looming over my head. Am starting to get impatient with friends who are happily chirping about the cool things they're spending or planning to spend their disposable income on, and (in turn) disgusted with myself for being so petty.

I know how whiny all this sounds, and I'm sorry. If I could bring myself to live less responsibly, I'm sure I would feel richer than I do. And I know that because I've not only been much poorer than I am now, but I know any number of people who would be thrilled to exchange financial situations (especially my excellent credit rating) with me.

Nonetheless, I'm tired of doing math in my head every time I'm too tired to cook dinner. I'm tired of having to put inexpensive luxuries on my Wish List instead of just buying them. I'm tired of having no savings. I'm tired of worrying about when the next unanticipated, unbudgeted expense is going to crop up and push back my debt-repayment timetable. I'm tired of congratulating myself on going through another day without spending money on anything fun so I can send more than the minimum payment to Visa at the end of the month.

Maybe I should get a part-time job.

Wedding & football updates (and possibly even a new Word Of The Day) as the week goes on. Stay tuned.

Crazy Speedway owner/operator on North Ave. and 355 wants $3.31 a gallon for regular unleaded. I had to double check to make sure it wasn't the cigarette price.

The Mobil on North Ave. and Bloomingdale Rd. wants only $2.83, but still. Fuck me.

I had occasion to redo my monthly budget yesterday, because my raise has finally kicked in -- which means that the big number at the top of the budget is finally getting bigger, instead of just the little numbers on the lower lines. Woo hoo!

All in all, my 3% raise translates to about an extra $50/month, after taxes. Since my rent just went up $35 in March, this isn't really cause for too much excitement.

One of the things I learned early on in budgeting is that you always want to have an entry for "Savings", and you always want to have an entry for "Misc." And if you don't know what to put for "Misc.", put $100. You'll spend it, believe me -- there's always something, whether it's a car registration or a new pair of jeans or a must-see concert or a magazine subscription you forgot about, that will fall into the category of "Misc." during the course of any calendar month.

What with adding the expense of my new car to the mix back in June of last year, I haven't been able to put that solid $100 down for either "Savings" or "Misc." for quite awhile. In fact, what with unexpected expenses like having to come up with $700 in a hurry to pay a dear friend's rent for them, and making up the difference out of credit cards and savings and limping along (relatively speaking) until I could finally pay the whole thing off with part of my tax return and my "extra" check this month, I've been lucky to put anything into "Savings." (There was always a birthday gift to buy, or a random impulsive gesture of generosity just to brighten someone's day to arrange, or something like that. But what the hey? Life's like that when you're a guy like me. All the bills get paid, so no huhu.)

Where am I going with this? Well, I was feeling a little disconcerted about the notion that factoring in my raise and carefully dividing the extra available funds between "Savings" and "Misc." didn't really make me feel any richer. I still wasn't able to get either of them up to $100/month, let alone having anything left after that.

But then I hit upon the notion of reorganizing my budget so that all the "real" bills were on top (listed in order of size) and making the last line something called "Savings / Misc." And voila! It seems that almost an eighth of my monthly pay is not specifically earmarked to pay a monthly bill (or buy food, which expense I've been carefully tracking for the past 9 months and have a rock-solid average for). Sure, there's gas and tolls and other necessary-but-unbudgeted expenses in there -- but nonetheless I feel a lot richer knowing that my "slush fund" is bigger than I'd been imagining it was when I was accounting for it the other way. :)

Since work seems to be under control for the moment and I have a few minutes while a report runs, I guess I might as well take a stab at the State of the Ajax thing. But first, a Doll Show quiz.

Of late, I have been feeling incredibly good about my life. And the number one reason for that is my wonderful paramour, Pamela. It's been so long since I've had someone special in my life that I'm practically giddy with happiness. I'm trying hard to maintain a certain amount of rationality -- things are still very new between us, and we face a number of challenges that are eventually going to come to a head as the relationship progresses -- but for now I'm mostly enjoying the crazy/happy sense of fulfillment I get whenever we're together, and the echo of it that I feel whenever we're talking online, or on the phone, or she wanders into my thoughts and distracts me from whatever I'm about. I love the way she makes me feel about myself, and I love doing everything I can to let her know how much it means to me, and doing my damnedest to make her feel the same way.

More. )

So that's what my mental state has been like for the past four or five weeks. Now I should probably get back to work, so -- more to come, both pictures and thoughts, tomorrow. :)

Neatly organized in bullet points for your amusement:
  • Had my annual review yesterday. I got a solidly average review, same as I got last year, because God forbid they waste an "exceptional performance" bonus on a peon like me. (But considering how much I slack off, I can't really bitch too much.) The most amusing part of the review is that I got above-average marks in things I really hate doing, avoid doing, and could probably do better when I can't avoid doing them -- dealing with customers, mostly -- and slightly below-average marks in things that aren't my fault.

F'rinstance...the reports that I came up with basically out of whole cloth, that allow management to neatly quantify performance in a number of areas, don't quite match the numbers that Corporate produces. Because nobody up there will tell me how they come up with them. Clearly this is all my fault, because my boss has told me several times that he wants them to match, and they still don't match. Leave aside the fact that I'm far more confident in my numbers, because Corporate's reporting has been iffy ever since I started here -- it's obviously more important to get the same answer they get than to get the right answer.

  • The result of the solidly average review: a 3% raise, which kicks me up over the $30,000 mark for the first time in my working life. Also, I can expect a profit-sharing check of $700+ (which means $500+ after taxes) in mid-April. Which is also when the raise goes through. Which is also a 3-paycheck month for us. April's gonna be a good month in Ajax-land -- I might take a couple vacation days and go down to Austin to celebrate being so flush with cashola.

  • Remember on Wednesday, when I posted that I felt OK about taking a second sick day because my boss was going to be in Denver? Well, turns out he didn't go to Denver after all, and was a little peeved that I'd called another supervisor instead of him to let them know I wasn't coming in. But whatever -- it's not like I was in a position to know that he was in the office, or anything.

And the reason he didn't go to Denver? Because he gave two weeks notice instead. That's right: my boss is quitting. Just when I'd finally got him broken in! Whoever replaces him will be my fourth direct supervisor in the 2.5 years I've been with WOW. And since the company has yet to hire a single person for upper management internally, no doubt I'll be given the task of teaching the new guy about all the procedures we have in place -- just before he decides to make his mark by changing everything to suit the way he used to do things back when he worked with one of our V.P.s at another company 15 years ago. (And yeah, I am assuming it will be a "he" -- we do have female execs, but almost none of them have worked in the Technical Ops department, where I work.)

  • I still feel sick and don't wanna be here today. Thank God I've got all my major deadliney stuff finished and can finally waste some time on livejournal. C'mon, 6:30...

Hey, that sounds like: the sound of Pamela kicking my ass in Literati (again)
Back in January, I was surprised to receive some correspondence from the Science Fiction Book Club, which I've been periodically buying books from for, I dunno, four or five years now. It seems that they were concerned that I hadn't bought anything from them for "a long while", and were wondering if there was any reason for this. The letter went on to ask that I write them an email with any feedback I had to help them improve the club, in return for which they'd send me a coupon for a free book. Yes, a free book! In exchange for writing an email!

What was puzzling is that I could've sworn I'd bought something from them fairly recently. I went back and checked my account status, and my last order had been in September of '04, about $50 worth of books. But whatever -- maybe they were expecting a big Christmas order that didn't materialize, or maybe 4 months is "a long while" in the bookselling world. And hey, I like the club and I like free books, so I sat down for 45 minutes and told 'em what I thought. Basically, "keep up the good work" and "I might buy more often if you gave me free shipping more often" and "I don't like trying new authors in hardcover without knowing which authors I've already read that they're similar to, how about putting that info on the website".

And they sent me my coupon and I ordered my free book, and all was well with the world.

Then I got another piece of mail from them today, which said...heh, well, it's probably best just to transcribe it:
Seth Radwell, The Science Fiction Book Club's president recently sent you a letter asking for comments on how we can improve the club. This letter was intended to be mailed to members who had not purchased in a long while. In error, this letter was sent to some of our most active and valuable members like you.

We would like to apologize for this mistake, and thank those of you who sent in feedback on how to improve The Science Fiction Book Club experience.
And this is after they sent me an email last week saying essentially the same thing. I'm all like, "Dude! You asked me for feedback I was more than happy to give, and gave me a free book! Stop apologizing already!"

(I wonder if what they're really sorry about is the fact that they gave away more free shit than they intended to, and whether Mr. Seth Radwell, president of The Science Fiction Book Club, is gonna be making some heads roll for screwing up the mailing list and costing the company money. But hey, a free book is a free book. And it probably made them money anyway, since it reminded me that I haven't been back there lately to buy anything.)

So since I recently received my tax refund, I decided to splurge, and bought the first three novels of George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, since it was buy-two-get-one-free week. The only George R. R. Martin I've read before was the Wild Cards shared-world series, which he edited and wrote some of the stories for. But these books have been heartily recommended in various contexts (although I can't remember if I've heard any reviews from the usual fantasy-reading suspects on my Friends list, like [info]stankow, [info]ericrapp, [info]manda_x, or [info]cassandrasimplx) so I thought I'd give them a shot.

Hey, that sounds like: Megadeth -- Killing Is My Business...
It's playoff time! Two teams enter, one team leaves.

On to the Final Four!

Other scores around the league:
  • CRAZY HORSE 94 - THE STAR-CROSSED LOVERS 25

  • HELLS KITCHEN 43 - EXPLODING SEAMEN 114

  • BAD MO FO 74 - PLAYERS 63

Which, if you're a true football nerd and have been keeping track, means that the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th playoff seeds have advanced to the second round. (The pressure is really on "Bad Mo Fo" and the "Exploding Seamen" next week -- they are the two remaining teams that haven't won any money, and won't unless they can pull off an upset.) Next week pits me against the Seamen, and Mike's plucky band against the Bad Mo Fo. I haven't mentioned this before, but the Mo Fo is the league's defending champ -- and never tires of reminding everyone of this fact on our message board -- so Mike is dearly hoping to eliminate him.

For my part, the Seamen came out of the Blue division just as I did, and actually stole first place from me way back in Week 6. I handed them a crushing defeat in the last game of the regular season, however, so I don't anticipate any trouble advancing to the Superbowl despite the 114 point performance they put on this week. And advancing thereto guarantees me another $250 even if I lose, or another $820 if I'm victorious. (A supplemental prize for this year's champion, to quote the league's commissioner, is "bare-ass smacks on the second place coach at next year's draft." Reason enough to play hard in the big game.)

But that's still in the future. For now, on to victory over the Exploding Seamen!

NFL Picks: A pretty average week for me this week: I ended up 9-7. So my record for the year stands at 113-79, or 58.9%. Happily, since most of the other teams also picked poorly, this was enough to catapult me up to 6th place overall -- the first time I've been ranked this highly since the season started, I believe. But since I'm still 10 games behind the first-place team, which is almost a full week's worth of picks, advancing in the standings doesn't do me much good.

The games I missed -- Atlanta to stop Tampa Bay (a shocker -- the Bucs shut out this powerful offense); New Orleans to defeat Carolina (the Panthers are really coming on in the latter half of the season); Baltimore to drop Cincinnatti (only one team correctly picked this one); the N.Y. Giants to stop Washington (the Giants are flailing with Eli Manning at QB); Minnesota to beat Chicago (glad to be wrong about that once, especially because everyone else was wrong too); Jacksonville to defeat Pittsburgh (this was an upset pick, and ended dramatically -- if their kicker had managed a 60-yard field goal as time expired, J-ville would have won. He came close!)

And finally, everybody expected the Seahawks to come away with a win at home vs. Dallas yesterday, but the goddamn Cowboys rallied twice from deficits of 10 points or more to snatch a 43-39 victory from the jaws of defeat. I didn't get to watch the first half, because ABC 7 insisted on showing us a burning building for three-and-a-half freakin' hours last night. Call me a callous bastard, but since I wasn't in the building, nor did I know anybody who was, I would rather have watched football.

Plastic Fantasy Football: We have our second playoff team! Clan's Bronx BadBoys pulled off a second straight win, this time beating Los Tastiks 179-165, to guarantee themselves a playoff berth.

Elsewhere in the league, I once again threw myself on the tender mercies of Peyton Manning as I faced Miah's Defenestrators for the third time this season. And once again Miah took my boys to school, to the tune of a 193-147 ass-whoopin', thus gaining his 7th straight win. If you're paying attention, that means he has beaten every single other team in the league -- in a row -- and won two more games besides, since his last loss. Can anybody beat him?
