Hey, that sounds like: The Runaways -- Don't Go Away
Last night's Testament show was awesome!

I hadn't been out to The Pearl Room before, but it's a pretty great venue. While the floor in front of the stage was packed cheek-by-jowl with people in black T-shirts, there's also a catwalk that was much less crowded and provided a better view, although I didn't discover that it was open to everybody until there were only three songs left in the set. Parking was also not a problem, because the place is in a massive strip mall that's right next to an industrial park, with streetside parking stretching back for half a mile or more.

Since I'd researched the opening acts on YouTube and MySpace earlier in the day and discovered they weren't really worth the extra time on my feet I'd have to spend to see them, I left about 9:30 and arrived in the middle of Testament's sound check. The drive out is also almost ludicrously simple from my house: 355 south to I-80 east accounts for 95% of the trip, and the venue is basically right off the interstate.

The one sour note of the evening was this: ten minutes before the first note of music was even played, a pretty full 16 oz. cup of beer came soaring over the crowd and crashed right into my chest. Even that wasn't so bad, because I reflected that a) at least it didn't hit me in the face, and b) I wasn't the one who had just wasted seven bucks.

Testament played a great set, and resisted the temptation so many bands have to play 3/4 of their new album and only pull out the classics when the crowd starts to get restless. (I'm looking at you, Clutch!) I'd say a good 80% of the setlist was pre-1995 stuff, and the crowd loved it. Chuck Billy still has great pipes, even after adding twenty years, thirty pounds, and being (successfully) treated for cancer. And Alex Skolnick, rejoining his first-ever band after an absence of 16 years, fucking shredded.

All of which is to say that the Metal Masters tour in August is going to be incredible!

Hey, that sounds like: Monster Magnet -- Crop Circle
  • Busy weekend coming up: tonight is Bo-topia (a.k.a. [info]wurdsome's birthday party) which I'm leaving for straight from work, then tomorrow evening I'm off to see Testament (and several other metal bands I've never heard of) as part of Powerfest 2008 in scenic Mokena, IL. And Sunday I'll spend doing the chores I should do Saturday, but won't because I have the excuse of the concert.

  • My BushBucks have arrived! And it looks like I'll be stimulating the economy more than I thought. I decided to spend some of it on new books and somehow that turned into a $100 orgy of expenditure last night at SFBC.com -- they were having a sale, $9.99 per book after you buy two at regular price. I'm getting A Canticle For Leibowitz (which, inexcusably, I haven't read yet), World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, and the first six (!) books in Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, which is projected to run to ten.

  • And while I was being frivolous, I also spent another hundred bucks for a ticket to the Metal Masters Tour in August. Actually, make that $45 for the ticket, $30 for parking, and $25 in various fees and fuck-you charges. The headliners are Judas Priest and Heaven and Hell (which is basically Dio-era Black Sabbath, minus Bill Ward, plus Vinnie Appice) and the opening acts are Motörhead and Testament (again!) In a way this show will be me coming full circle in my concert-going history: the first concert I ever attended was a Judas Priest / Megadeth / Testament show at Rosemont Horizon in 1990. But to be totally honest, the thing that clinched it for me is "how many chances am I going to get to see Motörhead?"

  • For those of you who are going to the Cubs game on 5/17 -- and [info]neonhummingbird, I'm still counting you as a "yes" because [info]stankow has volunteered to cover some of your ticket, so please let me know if you weren't aware of that and have made other plans -- and have been wondering how to reimburse me, I haven't been able to think of an easier means than PayPal to take care of that, unless you want to bring a personal check with you.

Accordingly, my PayPal account is under exaustinite(at)hotmail.com, and the ticket price is $52.00, so whenever you're ready, willing, and fully-funded, let 'er rip. I'm covering all the taxes and fees and whatnot, to apologize for the crappiness and priciness of the seats, so don't worry about that. If you would prefer to send a personal check or something through snail mail, send an email to that address instead and I'll give you my meatspace coordinates. :)

(Oh, and there's still one ticket left, by the by...)

  • What else? Ah, yes. Those of you who were privy to my red light violation post back in March may be interested to know that I did go ahead and contest it by mail after all, but I ended up having to pay it anyway, as many including myself suspected I would.

On the other hand, I also got a notice from the IL Tollway Authority a few days afterward, demanding $220.00 in unpaid tolls and fees, which I managed to deal with over the phone without having to pay a single cent for. Turns out the expiration date had run out on the credit card I had tied to my I-Pass account, and I didn't realize this for about a week. When I updated it, the account still showed a small balance, so I figured I'd gotten lucky, but alas this was not the case. The gentleman I spoke to on the phone was very helpful and waived all the fees -- as well as the unpaid toll charges, which turned out to have been paid automatically as soon as I corrected my info on the I-Pass Account. So thanks for the pointless scary mail, IL Tollway Authority.
That seems like enough for now. TGIF! And PSA: Mother's Day is a week from Sunday! Don't forget!

Hey, that sounds like: Murder By Death -- Fuego

Word Of The Week -- styptic

Definition: styp·tic (stĭp'tĭk)
adj.
  1. Serving to contract organic tissue; astringent; binding.

  2. Serving to check hemorrhage or bleeding, as a drug; hemostatic.
n.
A styptic agent or substance.
Etymology: [Middle English: stiptik, from Old French stiptique, from Latin stȳpticus, from Greek stūptikos, from stūphein, to contract.]

Obscurity: 35% (I know where and how to use this word, but am uncertain of its actual definition.)

Usefulness: 5% (Jargon word, not generally used in casual conversation.)

Examples:
(def. 1) "The styptic effects of eating an unripe persimmon on the mouth are well-documented."
(def. 2) "Although witch hazel is rumored to possess styptic qualities, no clinical data has emerged to confirm these claims."
(def. 3) "Nurse, would you mind administering the styptic I asked for ten minutes ago, before this guy bleeds to death?"

I'd often heard references to styptic pencils here and there, but I never saw one or really figured out what they were. Now I know!

In other news, the Clutch concert was successfully attended and enjoyed last night.

Read more about the Clutch concert! )

One final note on the show: I caught about half of the set of the second opening act, Murder By Death, and based on what I heard I think that [info]naked_irish, [info]byrneout and [info]errforce1 might like them. They gave off sort of a "Dropkick Murphys meets Social Distortion" vibe live, and they feature a cute girl playing cello. Worth a listen.

Don't mind me, I'm just: hungry
Hey, that sounds like: Static-X -- I'm With Stupid
So the Chris Cornell show last night was, overall, pretty damn awesome. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I had a hell of a time and feel like my money was well spent -- which is the least you should expect from a night out, right?

Firstly and foremostly, ear plugs are for the win. This was my inaugural attempt at wearing them to a show and they worked exactly as advertised -- they swallowed all the hurty stuff I didn't need to hear without obscuring the stuff I wanted to hear. I was left with nothing but a teeny bit of ringing after the show, which faded after a night's sleep, as opposed to the blown-speaker whistling and 48 hours of near-deafness following the last big show I went to. So count me in for earplugs at all future major concert events.

Secondly, the opening act, Juliette and The Licks -- well, they tried. I gotta give 'em that. But the odds were stacked pretty far against them with an early (7:00pm) start time and they were quite obviously not who anybody was there to see. I didn't recognize Juliette Lewis at all, and although she tried her hardest to cop a Yeah Yeah Yeahs / Pretenders vibe, and her stagecraft was all right, the voice and the songwriting just weren't there. As movie-star vanity bands go, they're no Dogstar or Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts.

Finally and most importantly, Chris Cornell rocked the hizzouse. The contrast between Lewis's performance -- which she worked just as hard as she could, and barely got a rise out of the crowd -- and Cornell, who had the whole place in thrall just by wandering peacefully from place to place on stage and an occasional lazy gesture with his right hand, could not have been starker. That's the difference between a rock star and an actress pretending to be a rock star, folks.

The band backing him up were competent but not particularly inspired. A pair of brothers (who look enough alike that they could've been twins) on guitar, a bearded bald guy on bass, and a drummer with emo bangs, all of whose names I was told and promptly forgot. The drummer kept the beat all right, but he was no Brad Wilk and certainly no Matt Cameron. The string section knew the songs and did their best, but covering two of the most distinctive and talented guitar players in the past twenty years of rock music, Tom Morello and Kim Thayil, is a task nobody should feel ashamed at not hitting out of the park. Which they didn't.

So Chris was clearly the star of the show, and clearly knew it, but it was cool. They played a tight, solid set of tracks, heavily mining Audioslave singles ("Show Me How to Live", "Out of Exile", "Be Yourself", "Like a Stone", etc.) and Superunknown. I didn't hear my favorite Audioslave tunes, but that was more than made up for by the inclusion of "Rusty Cage", "Outshined", and "Jesus Christ Pose" from Badmotorfinger. He also threw in some stuff off the new solo album, mostly ballads where his (amazing) voice is doing most of the work. I hadn't heard any of them before, but I liked what I heard -- especially "No Such Thing" and "Safe and Sound." "Finally Forever" is a sweet song which, he told us, he wrote for his wife and played for the first time at their wedding reception. Awww!

A couple of fun surprises: he dusted off "Say Hello To Heaven" from the Temple of the Dog album as the sixth song of the night and got a big response from the crowd; the lead guitarist was at his best covering Stone Gossard's licks, which didn't surprise me. Second fun surprise was a version of "Billie Jean" (yes, that "Billie Jean") done as a soulful acoustic ballad rather than a bouncy R&B groove. Another big response from the crowd -- apparently that one's on the new album too.

We had a fine thunderstorm with plenty of flashy lightning arcing across the sky on the drive home, but mercifully not too much rain as I walked the couple-three blocks back to my car. I was in the mood for a Baconator nightcap before I hit the sack (dinner had been small and rather rushed) but the line at the Wendy's was long enough that I didn't feel like missing a half hour's sleep to procure one. So instead I went to McDonald's for the first time in a long, long while -- I pretty much only eat McDisease at O'Hare, now that I think about it -- and got a chicken sandwich and extremely salty fries.

A fine evening all around. :)

The lost episodes. )

Ironically, the band I saw most often in Austin (Soulhat, who are also my favorite Austin band) I have no stubs for, because I was seeing them at Emo's, Stubb's BBQ, Steamboat, and Liberty Lunch, and tickets were always available at the door.

More about the Chris Cornell show in a subsequent post -- gotta dash off to work now. :)

Hey, that sounds like: Spiritual Beggars -- Killing Time

Word Of The Week -- acedia

Definition: a·ce·di·a (&-sē'dē-&)
n.
  1. Spiritual torpor and apathy; ennui.

  2. Sloth; apathy and inactivity in the practice of virtue.
Etymology: [Late Latin: from Greek akēdeia, indifference: a-, a-; see a-¹ + kēdos, care.]

Obscurity: 65% (Might have seen this once or twice, but have no clue what it means.)

Usefulness: 30% (Scans well, but more common synonyms are generally preferred for casual conversation.)

Examples:
(def. 1) "Patrick's acedia made him a difficult companion at religious functions, because he also had trouble faking sincerity."
(def. 2) "Despite the missionaries' daily sermons preaching against the perils of acedia, the islanders continued to live their lives in idle tranquility and made little effort to 'improve' their society."

Two weeks in a row I've come into work on Wednesday super-early, and two weeks in a row I've selected synonyms for laziness or sluggishness as the Word of the Week. Coincidence? I think not!

Today's is a happier reason for coming in early, though. Right after work I'm driving up to Milwaukee to attend a Clutch concert at The Rave. It'll be my first time going to that club, (or anyplace in Milwaukee since Kate took me to Conejito's Place on a road trip a couple Memorial Day weekends ago) but it's close enough to I-94 that even I should have trouble getting lost.

Long-time readers of my journal may recall that I've seen Clutch live before; on Good Friday in 2004, in fact. I've sent the last couple days listening to their new album in preparation, which doesn't seem to be their finest effort to date, alas. But I still have high hopes for the show -- and this time I'm bringing earplugs, having learned my lesson after the last Clutch show. :)

Hey, that sounds like: They Might Be Giants -- Whistling In The Dark
It's been awhile since I cleaned out the ol' camera, so I took some time this morning and polished up some pictures I've been meaning to resize and post. Enjoy.

[Note: Tooltips are used liberally here to save space. 'Cos there's a lot of damn pitchers here.]

First off, the kitty pics. Here's Ginko and Oreo being cute:

Arr rarr arr! Gonna getcha! C'mere, you... . Who, us? No, we're not playing. Nope. Not at all.

Oreo is just so adorable when the camera's on her. Look at that little face!

Last Friday I was in attendance at the final gig for Bo ([info]misskaz's way cool boyfriend)'s band Arks, who broke up last week over creative differences and concerns about the time commitment. (These things happen.)

This was also the first Arks gig I've attended, so talk about coming in under the wire. They did not disappoint, and they played my favorite song. And I really needed a distraction due to my recent romantic disentanglement, so I'm awful glad I went. And that Karen bought me two rum and cokes. :)

A Farewell To Arks )

Yesterday, [info]mchristensen was in town, so a few of us got together for a little mini Plastic Meetup. We started the evening at a bar called T's, then adjourned to [info]misskaz's place for Battlestar Galactica and Katamari Damacy. A good time was had by all. :)

Various Plastic peoples enjoying selves. )

After Matt, Brian, and Miah left, I hung out for about another hour to sober up and do some emotional venting with Karen and Bo, then jumped in the car and drove home (without getting lost, even!) about 1:00. Rain came pounding down during about the last twenty minutes of my drive, and there was a big traffic jam on I-90 (at 1:30 on a Friday night, no less) but other than getting a little soaked when I ran in the house with my bottle of rum and my burned copy of Civilization 3 -- thanks, Bo! -- I made it back without incident.

Then I did some #plastic chatting (and showed [info]rawdogue some un-resized versions of the meetup photos) whilst I dried off, and went to bed. I had a wonderful, happy, sexy dream during the last two hours of sleep, and awoke with an astonishing feeling of well-being. Yay for me. :)

Just got back from the Clutch concert at the Bottom Lounge downtown. Three-word summary: it fuckin' rocked.

Details )

Dinner wound up being a big bowl of Crunch Berries -- healthy! I spent $50 on a couple of T-shirts at the show, too; one short-sleeved one, and one long-sleeved one. (It occurred to me when I made it home that I haven't worn a long-sleeved T-shirt in probably twenty years.) Pictures of the shirts later, maybe, if I can muster the time and energy -- I stupidly forgot to take the camera to the show, but after seeing the difficulty other people had in getting decent pics in that environment it's probably for the best.

Oh, and my ears have been ringing since the show started. [Update 11:10 am: They still are, though they are much improved.] I guess I'm not nineteen anymore, so I might have to bite the bullet and start wearing ear guards ("GUARD YOUR EARS! With Gorman's") when I go out to shows. It seems like a wussyish thing to do -- that's always been my attitude, anyway, with the obvious exception for professionals, who have to listen to music at concert volumes every day for years on end -- but in the long run, I'd rather be a wuss than not be able to listen to music ever again.

All in all, good show, great band, Good Friday. Who could ask for more?
