Darwin

This is Darwin, an orange tabby barn cat. We adopted him when he was two months old. He quickly adjusted to indoor life, but still loves chasing toy mice. He is now one year old and lives with his adoptive cat sister. He is a now a large, fluffy long-haired cat. He loves any kind of food, belly rubs, visitors and he is very vocal.

TV here has caught up with London, so next new episode will be the conclusion to the two-parter of Doctor Who we watched with Nat.
I finished Moon Called by Patricia Briggs, and holy cow - I am totally salivating after the next ones.  This is a really good turning point in my reading habits, as it's only the second book I've finished in months. For some reason everything is still sitting on my shelf with bookmarks in them.  Only Terry Pratchett has had the mystical power to keep my interest, but I realize in the middle of the books that I have actually read all of the Discworld books, I just don't remember which is which sometimes.
(The other book I finished was Maureen Johnson's 13 Little Blue Envelopes and it was also excellent. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys humor and real-life adventure. It was especially fun considering that I had just made my first trip to England so I was right there with Ginny as she figures out what the heck is going on when she gets there.)

[info]drenormous, posting in [info]nflfans
ESPN is reporting that the NFL owners are likely going to opt out of the Collective Bargaining Agreement

If they do and a new agreement isn't reached, come 2010:
* No salary cap
* Players have to wait six years for free agency
* No draft

If it doesn't result in a strike or lockout, this could provide some highly amusing chaos. Though it would pretty much screw the small market teams twice over; not only wouldn't they be able to afford players, but players already have a non-monetary incentive to want to go to perpetual winners or warm, celebrity-friendly cities.

I think I'm going to make this today:

SPINACH-MUSHROOM QUICHE

1 frozen 9" deep dish pie shell
butter
1/2 lb. thinly sliced mushrooms
1/8 c. chopped onion
1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen chopped spinach, thawed & well drained
3 eggs
3/4 c. heavy cream
1/2 c. milk
1 tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 lb. Swiss cheese, shredded

In 12" skillet over medium heat, in 2 tablespoons butter, cook mushrooms and onion until tender, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove skillet from heat; stir in spinach; set aside.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In small saucepan, over low heat, melt 1/4 cup butter. In medium bowl with wire whisk, beat eggs with cream, milk, flour, salt and pepper, nutmeg and melted butter.

Spoon mixture evenly into crust; sprinkle with cheese; pour egg mixture over cheese. Bake 15 minutes. Bake 40 minutes longer at 325 degrees or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Later, I'm going to make a Grilled Tandoori Chicken recipe I found in Cooking Light. OM NOM NOM NOM NOM.
May. 17th, 2008 @ 08:02 am Above The Rim: Why Don’t We Win One On The Road?
[info]s2nblog

The 108-105 final shouldn’t have been nearly as close as it was; it’s a testament to the Jazz that they can fight back like that (and it probably wouldn’t have been that close if the refs didn’t seem like they were trying to equal out fouls each way.) But, Kobe Bryant got 34 (12 in the 4th), and Pau Gasol’s 17 points and 13 boards have the Lakers awaiting the winner of the Game 7 between the Spurs and the Hornets. Neither Carlos Boozer nor Mehmet Okur could really get it started tonight, as they hadn’t for much of the series, and that means that no matter what Deron Williams did, it wasn’t going to be enough. Whether Kobe & his Bench Mob, as SI called them, are going to be title-worthy is still anyone’s guess — as that closing was less than convincing.

Clearly, when Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are under 20 points for a game right now, it’s not good for the Celtics (Pierce had 16, Allen only nine points.) When LeBron is going off for 32 and 19 of those come in the second half on top of that, it means we’ve got Game 7 on Sunday, and what looks like the competition to see who can lose to the Pistons in six. What’s amazing is that LeBron is still shooting poorly yet he’s getting his in — he’s capable of destroying a team badly, and if it starts falling on Sunday, I expect Boston to cough it up.

Phillies 10, Blue Jays 3 - Jayson Werth goes deep three times and sets the Phillies record with 8 RBIs driven in.  The Jays’ David Purcey gets victimized for two of them, is sent down to Triple A immediately afterwards.

Angels 4, Dodgers 2 - Joe Saunders gets to 7-1 by only giving up a two-run jack to Andre Ethier.

Rangers 16, Astros 8 - Josh Hamilton goes 5-for-5 with two homers, as Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Michael Young, David Murphy, and Chris Shelton all take the Houston pitching staff deep.

White Sox 2, Giants 0 - Alexei Ramirez fills in for Juan Uribe and hits it out for the only runs of the game. Gavin Floyd and four relievers shut San Francisco’s lousy line-up out.

Diamondbacks 4, Tigers 3 - Dan Haren pitches seven solid, Eric Byrnes hits a homer and drives in two.

Twins 4, Rockies 2 - Colorado keeps falling, losing its sixth straight as Nick Blackburn pitches six innings to get the win. Clint Barmes was a homer short of the cycle in the losing effort.

Cubs 7, Pirates 4 - Alfonso Soriano hits two homers in his first two at-bats. Mark DeRosa and Geovany Soto add jacks to help Sean Gallagher, who gets his first win with six innings of one-run work.

Chessie sheds. It happens. Occasionally, we make jokes that she is destined to colonize our house by spawning little furballs all over, which she refers to as her "Manifest Chestiny."

Today I took Maya to the pet supply store, and picked up a Furminator. I used it for the first time this evening. I swear to Jebus, over the course of about 15 minutes, I pulled enough fur off Chessie to be mistaken for a strapping Guinea pig. Seriously.

Also got her some "grooming wipes", which are basically like handi-wipes for your cat. Used one. I think she's happy.

HB helped me plant my bulbs this morning. I then watered them in and started to tie my peas to their stakes but I had to come inside. My thick socks, gloves and hoodie weren't warm enough.

I checked on google - it was 12C at that point.

I'm now wearing my uggies and have a nanna-rug over my knees. HB's walked down into town for a haircut, I'm to meet him for lunch, then we're supposed to go to boot camp on the oval afterwards (our hall was double-booked on Thurs, so we have a make-up today).

Free Quran for Every Home: There's a nonprofit group in Chicago that is very calmly going through the suburbs leaving English translations of the Quran hanging on people's doors. They don't engage or talk to anyone, they're just leaving it there, with a number to call with questions, and a request to treat the book with respect if you don't want it.

I think that's pretty cool. (Apparently, translations of the Quran immediately cease to be the literal word of Allah, which... yeah, there are some early Christians I wish had taken that stance.) But still, as ways to educate the public about Islam go, this is pretty ambitious and not at all bad. And the response appears to have been reasonably good, even if many of them are entirely missing the point. (No, they're not (necessarily) trying to convert you, dude. They're trying to open lines of communication and education. Get over it.)

(Naturally, they're also getting many expletive-filled phone calls in response, which I've got money come from the same type of people who would have no compunction asking you in the grocery line if you've accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior. < rolling eyes >)

Also, as I was doing a little background research for this post, I found this link: USC-MSA compendium of Muslim Texts which has three translations of the Quran and extensive notes. Pretty interesting stuff.

Apparently, the quiz was difficult, and while leaving the room, a student stopped and said to him, "Boy, if that was just one of your quizzies, I can hardly wait to see your testies."

Realizing what that sounded like, the student ran out of the room and is probably running still.

At least it does before you go on national cable TV, I’d think. Chris Matthews is a dick (despite my dislike for Hillary Clinton as a candidate, the sexist remarks he’s made about her are awful), but he lines up this radio guy Kevin James from KRLA fairly easily.

Look, if you’re going to defend references to appeasement and basically accusing presidential candidates of it, be sure you know how to define appeasement and what got British PM Neville Chamberlain that label. The Sudetenland! Know it, motherfucker! Wikipedia’s pretty easy to use, and in Chamberlain’s case, is pretty accurate.

Ok, so I was at the ZZ Top show at The Backyard last night. So anyone that's been there recently knows what an absolute NIGHTMARE parking has become there... Especially leaving.

It offered up an occasion for an amusing observation.

In the aftermath of the show, the parking lot took on an almost "tailgate party" feel. Since there is only ONE way into the parking area, this means an exodus of many, many cars trying to leave all at one time, through a VERY small, one car at a time pathway. (Believe me folks, if you are planning on going to one of the last shows at the Backyard at this location, do yourself a favor, and take a cab. You'll be glad you did.) Parked right next to me, looked to be a guy, maybe around my age, possibly a little older, his son, and what was either the son's girlfriend or sister. Now dad is standing outside of the truck, smoking a joint, staggering JUUUUUUUUUST a little bit. He shared a little bit, as did I, as we reminisced about past ZZ Top shows.

We had a nice "conversation", and he goes walking back over to the truck where his kids are. He stands outside, takes a little more, and a piss, and his son starts saying to him,
"Dad, come on! Let's go!"
He replies, (with just a TIIIIINY bit of slurring), "What are you in such a hurry for? To go sit in line and wait THERE in exhaust fumes, instead of just sitting here? What's the big deal? What are you in such a hurry for?"
"I don't want to sit here all night, we can go! Come on!"

Here's the part I find amusing, and albeit, ironic.

Rewind that scene, 20 some odd years.

Dad was likely the one in the drivers seat, son was outside the car, and dad was yelling at him to get his butt in the car. For different reasons, and a different scenario, most likely. The mechanics of this situation however, would still have been the same.

You know, "things" in life... the mechanics of life... really don't change. They stay the same. Only the roles, and us, actually change.

Happy Friday everyone! Enjoy your weekend, and make sure you do something to guarantee you'll have at LEAST one good time.

I'm sure you've all heard this story by now, but there is something that bothers me terribly about all of this. The fact that if someone says she's been raped, that it gets played down so terribly that girls turn to YOUTUBE to talk about it.

What the hell is wrong with this system of ours? I mean, the 23 year old man got off on a technicality - she was going to turn 16 in ONE MONTH and since the age of consent is 16 in Florida, he got off.

I'm also troubled that there are girls out there that post lies about how they were raped when they weren't so they can get back at men. NO, I DON'T THINK THIS GIRL IS DOING THAT, but you can bet your ass that it's going to happen and make it difficult for the real rape victims to be heard.

Teen alleging rape turns to YouTube

By Ashley Fantz
CNN

(CNN) -- The video is hard to turn away from. A sobbing 16-year-old sits in her bedroom and, staring into a camera, says she has been raped.

Crystal, 16, of Florida posted a video on YouTube pleading for help after she allegedly was raped.

"Hi, my name is Crystal. ... I need some help. I didn't want to do it this way, but it's the only way I know that's going to work, that someone out there in the world is gonna listen to me."

The teen, whom CNN interviewed but is not identifying by her last name, is among dozens of young people who are turning to social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace to talk about sexual assault.

For an online generation, the Web offers what traditional counseling does not. It's a chance to communicate without having to face someone or fear their judgment. Some people are seeking legal advice and medical information, and many younger victims believe that they can warn others about their accused attacker, counselors say.

There also are people like Crystal, whose case was dropped by the Orange County, Florida, state attorney's office, who feel slighted by the justice system.

Don't mind me, I'm just: calm
The California Supreme Court decision -- and I have every confidence the decision will neither be rapidly stayed nor easily overturned, being as it rests on a primary concept in the California State Constitution -- is a dynamite opportunity to bring in some serious revenue.

Unlike Massachusetts, there is no residency requirement for marriage in California. The only requirement, as far as I know, is that one of the two individuals entering into the estate of matrimony must be a citizen of the US. I wouldn't be surprised if this would hold if one of the two individuals had their "green card." IANAL so I have no idea if this is the case or if I'm totally wrong. Anyway: this is an opportunity for travel companies, hotels and wedding planners to gear up for marriage tourism. I seem to remember that Nevada capitalized on its liberal marriage and divorce laws back in the '50s and '60s. Why shouldn't California do otherwise?

Really, California needs to get its financial house in order. This could be a painless way to increase California's income. Perhaps we need to adopt a slogan used by another state to promote tourism: "California is for lovers."
